In honor of Memorial Day

In the last 3 years I've had Mondays scheduled off at TJ's, so I have been pretty lucky to be able to have most of my Memorial Days off to enjoy some peace and tranquility. My first year as sign artist I worked a Memorial Day and tried to sneak in a little tribute on one of our demo signs (that was back when we actually had a little time to do such a thing...hahahaha)

Nothing fancy, but just a subtle little reminder to folks that Memorial Day isn't just about burgers and barbecues! R.I.P. to those that made the ultimate sacrifice.

Honey Moon

Aww...yeah.
Our buddy Billy in Stockton-CA stopped in with some love in celebration of my Honeymoon-time!
What a perfect board for the occasion!

"Hey! Mooning over your Honey-time!
Congrats again on the hitchin' up... hope you were able to enjoy some of the Honey Moon Wine on the honeymoon...
Had fun doing a "spacey" chalk for the Flyer wine endcap!
Cheers,
Billy
Stockton #76"

I've always loved how you get such vibrant, screaming color from your chalks, Bill. Tell me again, do you layer some white underneath first? Can you point us to a particular brand you use?

This board is just so colorful and bright that I just don't think a captain could ask for anything more.
I know at my store, I've been thrown the challenge of trying some boards without black backgrounds (which most of mine traditionally have) and I am going to be looking at some of your work for inspiration, man!

Thanks for sharing this endcap with us and also for the kind words during our Honeymoon-month!

Cookie template

Today I thought I would keep it simple and showcase a template.
I'm hoping to do more of that so we can get some great ideas for color, shape & size when it comes time to go through our individual sections and come up with a new template design.

This one was done by fellow artist Cassie at #129 in WA. Simple, bright and to the point. This cookie template was actually edited for simplification, as the cookie illustrations seemed excessive to our captain at the time. We tried multiple color combinations and finally settled on one that used bright, candy/frosting-like colors that gave a fun and "sweet" vibe to a most deliciously important cookie section. Fellow artist Mehgan (our resident graphics-whiz) popped the color in and toned down the yellow, adding a gradient to it highlight the price and give the background some depth. So simple, but so effective. Isn't that what it's about?

What would be cool and be interesting is to actually see this sketching and editing process in stages of a template design, so I'll try to capture that in the next couple of weeks or hold out for some submissions.

How about it- anyone have a template design on camera in stages?
Send it on in: tjsarthub@hotmail.com

Dino Wine Party

YAY! I've got a new sign artist to introduce to y'all!

"Hi! My name is Jen! I've been working as a sign artist at store #741 in Cary, NC since just before Christmas of last year. One of my fellow artists found your blog, and we've been having fun following it and seeing all the great work! I wanted to share a fun project I just finished... I painted a new trash can for our wine demo!

This......IS.....GREAT! Nice work, Jen! First off, welcome to the Hub! Glad you found us and so glad to be able to post this piece. I'm loving it. Like most of the images we put up, click it for a bigger more detailed version of the pic.

It's such a great idea to have a little garbage can in the wine section (I know we find all those gross, little crumpled up demo coffee cups everywhere), let alone one that is so colorful and cool-as-beans. I'm thinking these Dinos know what's up....it's cracking me up seein' Mr. T-Rex decked out for the Ball with a glass of red in his teeny, tiny little dino-hands.....hahahaha.. Just great imagery, Jen! Outstanding and brilliant color with great humor. More, please!

Anyone else out there have some garbage receptacles you've slapped some pain and a cool design on or something utterly clever like this piece? I know this may give many of you out there an idea for something to liven up with color in your store that may not already have it! Would love to hear some ideas and see some of your receptacles!

Resfreshed & Ready for Action!

I'm back!
As you can see for yourself, the scenery on our little mini-honeymoon was AWFUL. LOL.

As you can imagine, I am refreshed and ready to head back to work at Joe's, meet my new captain and also start trucking away on the Hub and get some good interaction going with all of you.

First things first.....submissions in my Inbox are surprisingly low after my hiatus.
We can remedy this -send your work and/or artist area ideas to: tjsarthub@hotmail.com

The Hub is here for all of us to interact with each other and share ideas, showcase our talents and to collectively solve some of our day-to-day challenges with this artist position. In order to do this, we need everyone to take an active part in the process! Newer or older sign artist, past or present, or simply someone that admires Trader Joe's unique, custom approach to signage ....it doesn't matter. This place is for everyone. It needs you to oil the machine in order for it to run!

Be back tomorrow....
